737 Gear Failure - Emergency Landing
This 737 had about the worst type of landing gear failure you can get. The pilot does a great job of landing the plane though. He has a first attempt and crazily goes around for another try. How he knew he could climb back out before the plane hit the ground I don't know. Anyway, the next landing is about the best you could hope for in this situation. (61 second MPEG, 1.9MB)

Boeing 747 Extreme Landing
While not strictly a crash this video is still stunning and should haunt the dreams of any engineer responsible for designing aircraft landing gear. Hong Kong’s Kai Tak International Airport (now closed) was legendary for its approach procedure, which was offset 90 degrees from the runway heading. Pilots of even the largest jumbo jets had to make a tight turn at low altitude just seconds before touching down. Here, a Korean Airlines 747 is making what, amazingly, is a typical approach into this airport. (18 second MPEG, 0.891 MB)

Tail Rotor Failure on News Helicopter
This helicopter crash is quite spectacular. In Brooklyn New York this Aerospatiale AS-350BA news helicopter makes a very hard landing on top of a building after it's tail rotor fails in mid flight. We see the pilot struggling to keep the chopper airborne but to no avail. Fortunately everybody walked away unharmed. If you are interested there is a preliminary report from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) here. (28 second MPEG, 2.0 MB)
Chinook Carrier Landing Goes Wrong
It seems that everyday now we hear about military helicopters crashing. Maybe this is poor maintenance, maybe it is the large number of flying hours that they complete each year, maybe it is the hostile terrain, or maybe it is complicated landing attempts. However, sometimes it is simply pilot error and this is one such classic example. Here we see a Sea Knight approaching a ship for landing. However, the pilot comes up a bit short and tries to back off for another attempt. However the left rear landing gear gets caught up on a safety barrier and the helicopter overturns right into the water. The look on the spotter face as he leans out the Chinook window is priceless. (79 second AVI, 2.6MB)
Darwin Award Nominee Tries to Fly a Helicopter with No Training
Chalk this one up as a Darwin Award Nominee. Here we see what happens when you cross an idiot with a small helicopter. This guy attempts to teach himself how to fly, no lessons and with obvious results. How on earth this guy managed to get the money to buy a Hughes 300 helicopter one can only guess. Maybe this is one of the reasons why low interest rates are such a bad idea. (68 second WMV, 2.2MB)
Darwin Award Nominee 2 - Why Helicopters Shouldn't Tow Boats
Here's another helicopter Darwin Award Classic. Helicopters are great for doing many things, but towing disabled boats back to the dock is apparently not their best forte. Here it is simply a miracle that the people in the boat were not hit by flying debris. I wonder if the pilot had to take a “709 ride” with the FAA after this. And if he did, what would the FAA test him on? The proper way to tow things with your rotorcraft? (26 Second WMV, 0.326MB)
